Letter to the editor: Importance of PlaniTulsa

Regardless of the mayoral election outcome, Tulsans remain engaged with PlaniTulsa, the long-overdue replacement of the city's 30-year-old comprehensive plan. PlaniTulsa finally begins to accomplish the recommendations of more than 10 years of prior studies in which many others and I participated.

Those multiple studies each understood that in order for Tulsa to compete and thrive, the outdated Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Code had to be updated to respond to a new century of diverse industries, technology and population. Go totulsaworld.com/planitulsa to learn more.

Our Vision (September '09 Draft)

This is the draft Vision, posted here since mid-September 2009.

Our Vision for Tulsa lays out concepts for how the City of Tulsa will look, function, and feel over the next 20-30 years. This vision is the guiding
document for Tulsa’s comprehensive plan update, PLANiTULSA, and describes the kinds of places, economy, housing and transportation choices, parks, and open spaces that the city’s policies should be designed to create.

Vision Map

Note the revised map. The second map does not include a bridge on South Yale. Although this bridge does appear on other approved INCOG plans, a formal alignment analysis has not been completed and the best alignment remains undetermined.

Survey Says Change

By KEVIN CANFIELD World Staff Writer
Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

At first glance it seemed an incongruous sight: large — and largely indecipherable — maps strewn about the floor of the Grand Lobby of the BOK Center.

But a few minutes into Tuesday's PlaniTulsa press conference, it all made sense: What better place to unveil survey results about the city's development future than in the crown jewel of recent local construction projects?

"The workshop maps that you see on the floor when you walked in illustrate what Tulsans want for the future of our great city," said Mayor Kathy Taylor.

Survey seeks future views

By KEVIN CANFIELD

Tulsans have through June 18 to complete a survey that will be used to plan how the city develops over the coming decades.

The "Which Way Tulsa?" survey is part of PlaniTulsa, the citywide program to update the city's comprehensive plan.

Survey participants are being asked to rank four development scenarios based on participants' priorities. For example, one question asks participants to rank which scenario "Provides me and my family with the range of transportation options we need."

Have It Your Way

The PLANiTULSA process is now getting down to the specifics. It's time for Tulsans who care to get down to brass tacks

BY MICHAEL D. BATES

About 500 Tulsans were present at Cain's Ballroom on Tuesday, March 13, to see the unveiling of four scenarios for Tulsa's future growth and development. A short presentation was followed by dozens of spirited conversations that spilled out on to Main Street and down the hill into Soundpony and Lola's and other Brady Arts District establishments.

The event launched a survey called "Which Way, Tulsa?" It's the latest step in the PLANiTULSA process of developing a new comprehensive plan for our city.

NewsOn6 Coverage of Cain's Ballroom Event

TULSA, OK -- They've talked. They've surveyed. They've mapped. Now, PlaniTulsa unveils four ideas for the city's future development. The group held a party in downtown Tulsa on Tuesday night to introduce the plans and find out what Tulsans think.

One of the ideas makes a big push for development in downtown Tulsa. They're calling it Downtown on Steroids. And, it's just one of the directions developers say Tulsans want to go.

Hundreds of residents filled Cain's Ballroom for the coming out party of sorts.
"I'm so excited about this. I wish we had done this 10 or 15 years ago. It will provide a guide to the kind of growth Tulsa needs," said Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor.

PlaniTulsa's mission was to develop a comprehensive, long-range plan for the city's growth. After eight months, dozens of meetings, and input from more than 2,000 Tulsans, they've come up with four scenarios for the future.

The input is in, the options are set, and now it's time for the people to decide what direction the city should take as it moves into the future. "Which Way, Tulsa?" on Tuesday kicked off the monthlong chance for Tulsans to rank their priorities in regard to the city's comprehensive plan.

Nearly a thousand people turned out at the Cain's Ballroom to learn about the different options the city can take concerning growth as laid out by PlaniTulsa. PlaniTulsa is a community-wide planning project that drew input from 1,500 people during 10 development workshops to come up with ideas on how to shape the city's comprehensive plan.
